Stanford’s Hong Captures National All-Around Crown
2023 Xfinity U.S. Championships
SAP Center, San Jose, California, USA
Men Day 2 Aug 26, 2023
The youth movement within men’s USA Gymnastics was on full display Saturday night in San Jose.
19 year old Stanford University college freshman, Asher Hong captured the coveted Gold Medal in the men’s all-around competition. Joining Asher on the medal stand was University of Michigan’s 19 year old freshman Fred Richard. Richard earned a Bronze Medal in the all-around and a Gold for his performance on the high bar. 21 year old Khoi Young with Stanford Gymnastics collected the Silver medal in the all-around.
Taking other apparatus titles were Paul Juda (Deerfield, Ill./University of Michigan) on floor (29.300), Stephen Nedoroscik (Worcester, Mass./EVO Gymnastics) on pommel horse (31.301), reigning champion Donnell Whittenburg (Baltimore, Md./Salto Gymnastics Center) on rings (30.272), Kameron Nelson (Evans, Ga./Ohio State University) on vault (28.325) and Yul Moldauer (Arvada, Colo./5280 Gymnastics) on parallel bars (31.360).
Asher is that exceptional athlete who’s skill and strength are matched by his boundless enthusiasim on and off the competition surface. When he celebrates – “It’s for the team, to get them pumped up before their routines and that’s one of my favorite parts of the job. Bringing the energy that you need for the competition, and I love doing that.”
2023 has been a breakout year for the talented college freshman, “Winning a national championship at a senior event is really exciting. I’ve done a lot of hard work in the gym and if I’m selected for the world team, I’ll work just as hard to perform at the worlds and hopefully get the team on the podium.”
All-Around Bronze Medalist Frederick Richard reflecting on his performance at nationals: “I feel like in every event I was kind of just hanging on. I wasn’t thriving and my whole goal coming here was to thrive on each event. It makes me want to figure out how to get that extra edge.” Looking forward – “There’s still a whole other level I need to figure out. Know how to compete on the big stage and excel, not just not just hit sets, but actually, to do that next level of performance.”
The future for USA Men’s Artistic Gymnastics is bright indeed.
