U.S. Gymnastics Nationals This Weekend at SAP Center (San Jose)

August 24, 2023, San Jose, California USA

San Jose Sports Authority Executive Director John Poch welcomed USA Gymnastics to the SAP Center in San Jose for this weekend’s U.S. National Championships. Joining Mr. Poch at the Kick-Off press conference was USA Gymnastics President & CEO Li Li Leung. “There’s been a lot happening in the world of gymnastics, and the excitement around these championships are really unlike anything that we have seen before,” said Leung.  She gave a positive report on the state of the sport, reflecting about the work the organization and the community have done during the 4+ years she has been at the helm. Progress continues in an effort to change the culture of gymnastics with priority given to athlete safety, health, and well being. “While there’s no question that, this is an intense competition, our goal has always been to make this sport safe and to make it fun again as well. Whether someone is an athlete, a fan, a parent, a coach, a judge, or club owner, we really want all of you to feel safe and enjoy the event.”

This will be one of the deepest fields of artistic gymnasts assembled for a national event. Among the athletes scheduled to compete in the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, 146 are registered to compete for medals in both men’s and women’s events at both junior and senior level competition.

• Collectively they have won 62 medals in Olympic or World Championships competition.
• 11 athletes have been Olympic team members (6) or alternates (5)
• 12 athletes have won a combined 46 U.S. titles

Adding an historic element to the Championships, 2023 will be the first time two Olympic Individual All-Around Gold Medalists (Simone Biles and Suni Lee) have competed at the same event.

The men will compete on Thursday and Saturday, and the women on Friday and Sunday.
