TrackWrestling D1 Rankings

BY TRACKWRESTLING | NOV. 06, 2018, 7:14 P.M. (ET)

College wrestling is back, and so are the Trackwrestling Division I rankings presented by Resilite.

The first week of action produced some notable upsets, some intriguing weight-class changes and some movement in the first in-season set of rankings.

Penn State remains the team to beat with seven wrestlers ranked in the top five of their respective weight classes, led by three top-ranked individuals — two-time NCAA champions Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165) and Bo Nickal (197). The Nittany Lions are currently projected to score 114.5 placement and advancement points at the NCAA Championships.

Ohio State is ranked No. 2 with 83.5 points. Iowa (79.5 points) and Oklahoma State (64.5), with 10 ranked individuals each, check in at third and fourth, respectively.

True freshmen made a big splash on opening weekend, though several of the top rookie stars appear at the moment to be redshirting. Michigan’s Will Lewan toppled two-time All-America teammate Alec Pantaleo 10-8 in overtime in the 157-pound title bout at the Michigan State Open. Missouri’s Brock Mauller downed Iowa State’s Jarrett Degen, a returning NCAA round of 12 participant, 12-6 at 149 pounds in the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open.

Three-time age-group World champion Gable Steveson, a Minnesota freshman, kicked off his college career by winning the Daktronics Open heavyweight title.

The most notable change in this week’s rankings occurred due to a weight change. Returning NCAA runner-up Nick Suriano of Rutgers moved up a weight to start his junior season. He slots in this week as the third-ranked 133-pounder, behind returning national chamnpion Seth Gross and 2018 runner-up Stevan Micic.

The Trackwrestling team rankings are based off the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25.

The rankings are compiled by David Mirikitani.
